The Storyteller Wedding Photographer
In our previous blog "Qualitiesof a Wedding Photographer" we mention: Consistency, Likability, Cool Under Pressure, Be up to Date, and being a Keen Observer as qualities of the successful wedding photographer. Today, I found this beautiful quote from Elliot Erwitt that illustrates perfectly the keen observer quality :"Good photography is not about zone printing or any other Ansel Adams nonsense. It’s about seeing. You either see or you don’t see. The rest is academic. Photography is simply a function of noticing things. Nothing more.”
There is another important quality that must be added to the list. It is the storyteller quality. The wedding day is a collection of moments that when pulled together must make a whole story. Therefore a wedding photographer must be aware of the elements of a good narrative: introduction, body and end. Capturing emotions, humor and tension is what will make the story interesting to the viewer. You should bring the story alive by capturing the moments that go unnoticed even for the guests: a barman serving a drink, the different foods served, the details of the location and so on. A wedding photographer must be exposed to topics like food, wines, and fashion so that it reflects the current trends.
Preparation will set you ready for what is going to happen and as a result you will know when to release the shutter. That is why it is vital that you know your clients, the plans for the day in both the wedding and the reception. This knowledge must be acquire days if not weeks before the date. If possible visit the locations before the shooting day and take note of the lightning and how would affect your work. At Yelo34 Photography we meet with our clients in a quiet environment and try to know each other, we also encourage to take the engagement session with us so the couple accustom to our rhythm and personal characteristics. The main objective, it is not just the business but achieving that when the big day arrives the photographer looks like another friend of the couple, a person that is not an intruder.
Last advise: if you are a wedding photographer: Always dress to succeed!
